For decades, suicide was the second leading cause of death among children and youth in the United States of America; car (and other) accidents being the first. Now the third leading cause, (after homicide), and nonetheless alarming, it is a national health crisis of great magnitude. America has a war on its hands and funds for suicide prevention are not being federally allocated in such a way that the funds reach the grassroots workers in amounts that actually serve [at least] to keep crisis lines open where they are frequently most needed, not to mention providing for the plethora of related services required to manage this crisis. The onus for that provision is on us, the American people; those of us down here on the deck being the warm shoulder, the receptive ear and heart, holding the hands, drying the tears, talking folks down from the (l)edge. We volunteer our time, but our volunteering does not pay for the utility bills, phone bills, Internet connections, the rent on the required facilities...
